Description
Heike Crab and Chrysanthemums.
The Battle of Dan-no-ura was a great battle between the Heike and the Genji for control of Japan in the 12th century. As the story goes during the battle, when it seemed all was lost, the seven-year-old Emperor Antoku and his grandmother drowned, rather than allowing him to be captured by the opposing forces, and most members and generals of the Heike followed them in despair.
The Heikegani are said to resemble the faces of the fallen wariors of the Heike, and the crabs themselves are said to be the spirits of these warriors still walking the bottom of the sea.
Original drawing in ink and oil paint marker on 5x7 toned card.
NOTE Ships sleeved with a backing board in a rigid envelope, unframed.
